It still seems surreal that Argentina won the World Cup. It seems surreal that fate has finally been kind to Leo Messi.
There's been so many times that he has been unable to achieve that final touch of glory with Argentina.
So many random things - from Scaloni becoming the ARG coach by happenstance to Maupay injuring Leno that has led to them becoming Copa and World Champions. Or that 122' save from Dibu.
The long arc of justice for Leo seems finally complete.
Is Leo the GOAT?
For me, yes. I think it would be hard for us to really determine if he really is GOAT; to compare across eras and generations seems nearly futile.
There is no doubt that he was the Greatest of this Generation, and that was true before winning the WC.
Him winning the WC doesn't change the GOAT debate really.
It is at best a reply to a slur : "He's never achieved anything with Argentina".
Well, that's no longer true.
Messi really had an excellent performer this WC.
The standout moments for me from Messi were: • The Goal against Mexico in 64' when all looked bleak • The Assist in Netherlands Match with unreal vision. • That Assist in the Croatia Match where he beat a 20-year-old Gvardiol.
Looking back, this really was just the best possible outcome I could have hoped for; though I do wish ESP reached the Semis.
My only wish is to now see Messi in Barca colours at least a season before he retires.
